A Postcard from Nanjing.

Today's card was sent by Badhu from China. He sent me a card of Nanjing University, China.

Nanjing University, is a major public university, the oldest institution of higher learning in Nanjing, Jiangsu, and a member of the elite C9 League of Chinese universities.

Established in 1902 as Sanjiang Normal School, it underwent a number of name changes until it was renamed Nanjing University in 1950. It merged with the University of Nanking in 1952.

Nanjing, situated in the lower part of the Yangtze, has historically been the capital of various kingdoms and dynasties, with the reputation as the centre of education.

The entrance to Nanjing University

In 1949, during the late time of Chinese Civil War, the central government of the Republic of China retreated from Nanking and the National Central University was renamed National Nanking University after Nanking was controlled by CPC army, before the establishment of People's Republic of China. In 1952, many colleges and departments, mainly colleges of education (or teacher, normal, including art and physical education departments), engineering, agriculture, and medicine, were split from Nanjing University, and many new independent schools were formed, including Nanjing Normal University, Nanjing Institute of Technology which was located at former Nanjing University site and later renamed Southeast University, etc.

At the same time, the University of Nanking, a private university established in 1888 and sponsored by American churches, was merged into Nanjing University, which lost its "national" appellation in 1950 to reflect the reality that all universities in the PRC would be public, and Nanjing University moved the campus to the site of University of Nanking which was west to Gulou Mountain and was also once the site of imperial Nanjing University in ancient times. A separate National Central University was reinstated in Taiwan by its old alumni association in 1962.

Nanjing University

During the period of communist society including the period of Proletarian Cultural Revolution, the school suffered heavily. In 1976, Nanjing University faculty members and students launched Anti Cultural Revolution Force Movement which was called "Nanjing Incident" by the authorities of the time, spreading countrywide.

Many faculties have been re-established or newly founded since the Reform after 1978, e.g., law reestablished in 1981, medical school in 1987, environment department newly founded in 1984.

I'm guessing he sent this card from the University.

He wrote --

"Hello, I am Badhu. I am a 20-year old boy living in China. I love sports a lot. I have attended three marathons and basketball also my hobbies. How about you? Moreover, India in my mind is a mysterious country. Welcome to China in the future."

After reading this card now, I smiled uncertainly as India and China don't seem to be getting along well as of late. I hope everything improves soon.

Badhu stuck cute stickers of characters from Winnie the Pooh and 3 stamps of different denominations but from the same series issued in 2013; the greetings series.

The first stamp is an 80-fen stamp featuring a sailing ship, more specifically, a Galleon.

Galleons were large, multi-decked sailing ships first used as armed cargo carriers by European states from the 16th to 18th centuries during the age of sail and were the principal fleet units drafted for use as warships until the Anglo-Dutch Wars of the mid-1600s. Galleons generally carried three or more masts with a lateen fore-and-aft rig on the rear masts, were carvel built with a prominent squared-off raised stern, and used square-rigged sail plans on their fore-mast and main-masts.

A Galleon

The second one is a 1.20 yuan stamp featuring an illustration of fireworks.

The last stamp is a 3 yuan stamp featuring a bamboo plant.

China has the most abundant and diverse bamboo species. In China, a total of 861 species and infraspecific taxa in 43 genera have been reported, including 707 species, 52 varieties, 98 forma, and 4 hybrids. Bamboo is naturally distributed in 21 provinces.

Bamboo plays an important role in the development of Chinese historical culture. Through the ages, bamboo has been gaining increasing attention from Chinese people. As one of the fastest-growing plants, bamboo has become one of the most important forest resources and has a high commercial value and ecological function. Bamboo is indispensable in the manufacturing industry and the daily life of Chinese people.
